Football team survive scare to pick up first home win of season

LRFC hosted Foyle Wanderers on a soggy Autumn afternoon at the John Hunter Memorial Grounds with nothing less than a victory required.

The home side started very strongly and were dominating the Bready side with chances being created and some lovely flowing football being played.

Limavady went into the break with a much deserved 2-0 lead thanks to goals from right full back James Smyth and left forward Trevor Banks, with Banks playing particularly well and giving his counterpart a horrible time.

Foyle Wanderers emerged for the second half with their backs up and got back into the game within the first few minutes. In the midst of a reshuffle of personnel due to an injury to Limavady left back Blane McIlmoyle, a misplaced pass by makeshift left back Bobby Gordon got stuck in the soft rain sodden grass and a Foyle striker nipped in and finished beyond the rooted Seamy McAteer.

It was 2-2 soon after thanks to a beautiful strike into the top corner of the net from the edge of the box. Great goal by Foyle Wanderers but the Limavady side could have defended the situation better.

Credit to the Roesiders, they didn’t allow their collapse to continue and they started getting a foothold in the game again and their never say die attitude was rewarded when Trevor Banks finished low into the near corner from outside the area following a goalmouth scramble.

Limavady hung on for the remaining 20 minutes with some excellent defending, strong counter attacking and excellent ball retention getting them over the line for their first home win of the season.
